What To Do When Your Car Breaks Down on I-84 in Connecticut

If your car dies on I-84 in Waterbury or anywhere in central Connecticut, the next 5 minutes matter. Here's exactly what to do, in order.

Step 1: Get off the road safely

If the engine is still running, take the next exit immediately. Losing power? Coast as far onto the right shoulder as possible. Never stop in an active lane unless you absolutely cannot move.

Step 2: Hazards on, exit on the passenger side

Turn on hazards. If you must leave the car on a freeway shoulder, exit through the passenger door — away from traffic.

Step 3: Call (in this order)

  1. 911 — if blocking traffic or unsafe.
  2. CT DOT Highway Operations — they patrol I-84 in Connecticut and offer free help in some cases.
  3. Tow Bros at (860) 735-1566 — we work I-84 shoulders 24/7 and typical arrival is 30–45 minutes.

Step 4: Stay buckled in the car

The shoulder of I-84 is not safe, especially in winter. Stay in the car with your seatbelt on. Stay off the lane side of the vehicle entirely.

Step 5: Note your exact location

"I-84" isn't enough. Look for the nearest exit number, mile marker, or use what3words on your phone.
